Omega -3 Fatty Acids (Fish Oil)

    Omega-3 Fatty Acids (in fish oil):


    Action: 


    Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), are essential fatty acids with potent anti-inflammatory properties. They play a crucial role in brain health, heart health, and overall well-being.


    Benefits:

    • Anti-inflammatory: Helps reduce inflammation throughout the body.
    • Heart Health: May lower triglycerides, blood pressure, and the risk of heart disease.
    • Brain Health: Supports cognitive function, memory, and mood.
    • Eye Health: DHA is a major structural component of the retina.

    Side Effects:

    • Fishy aftertaste or burps: This is a common side effect, which can be minimized by taking enteric-coated capsules or taking the supplement with food.
    • Gastrointestinal upset: Some individuals may experience mild stomach upset, nausea, or diarrhea.
    • Increased bleeding risk: High doses of omega-3s may increase the risk of bleeding, especially in individuals taking blood thinners.

    Dosage:

    Adults need about 1200 mg daily, and less for children. Children under age 5 do not need any. It's important to choose a high-quality fish oil supplement that has been tested for purity and contaminants. 

    Cod liver oil and fermented butter oil do not provide the same benefits as concentrated fish oil in this context, and krill oil is not recommended due to potential toxicity.




    N.B: I use ground flax seeds two tablespoons daily instead of fish oil with good effects - no joint pains or swelling. Vegetable omega 3s are also available.
